The history of photography
Artist David Hockney and physicist Charles M. Falco created the Hockney-Falco thesis, which claimed that advances in realism and accuracy in the history of Western art since the Renaissance were the product of optical instruments such as convex mirrors, the camera obscura and the camera lucida.

photograms
In class, we have been experimenting with different photograms.
test strip
creating an interesting effect by painting the developer onto the paper instead of submerging the paper into the developer
double exposure
pin hole camera: a camera with a pinhole aperture and no lens. we made our own pinhole cameras and used them to take photos.
solarising: we used solarising to create a different effect to our photograms.
photos that inspire/describe me
in class, we have been asked to take photos that describe who we are as a person/photos of things that inspire us.
the first 3 of my photos were taken in venice and malta. i chose these photos as photos that inspire me because they remind me of being on holiday, and venice is one of my favourite places in the world. i liked the two top photos because there is a sense of balance in the photo created by the buildings either side of the canal.
the last 3 photos were taken underwater. these photographs describe me because i love swimming and being underwater. these photos inspire me because i find underwater photography very interesting, and want to research and find out more about it. |
Scott Speck:
Scott Speck is a pinhole photographer. I chose to research his photography because I especially like how he experiments with the angles at which he takes his photographs. Scott Speck enjoys using a pinhole camera to take photos because it has the ability to image with an effectively infinite depth of field - every distance has the same level of focus in the image. This means that you can record small details across all distance scales, enabling one to explore near to far perspectives, in which near objects appear larger in comparison to more distant objects.
His main subjects of interest are architectures, landscapes and portraits. He enjoys giving visual presentations on pinhole photography, and he also does pinhole photography by commission.

the SLR camera.
SLR stands for single lens reflex. there are many advantages to usng an slr camera, for example you can see exactly what the lens sees. on a digital slr, you can change the lenses and they have large image sensors which product high quality photos. an slr camera has a near-zero lag time, which means that is ideal for action photography.
apature
aperture: a space though which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument.
i took 3 photos to show how different aperture effects each photo. the photo appears brighter with lower aperture because more light can get through the lens.

shutter speed
shutter speed: the time for which a shutter is open at a given setting.
i took 4 photos to compare the effect of different shutter speeds on different photos. i found that as you decrease shutter speed, the photo becomes darker.

film cameras.
we used film cameras to take photos and developed them in the dark room.
contact sheet: i used my contact sheet to decide which photos to print
i first made a test strip to see how long the best exposure time was for my photo. (2 seconds)
